Security Guidance for Defence Staff
During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a issue in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every cars from China, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

This announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
