Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
